Why you must support Earthhour this Year.

Earth Hour started as a symbolic light-off event in 2007 in Sydney, driven by the WWF. After fifteen years, it has grown to become one of the world’s largest grassroots campaigns for the environment. It’s been fruitful in inspiring and empowering individuals, communities, businesses, organizations, and governments in over 190 countries to take action against climate change and now nature loss.

Although climate change remains a pivotal concern for the planet, we must equally shade light on the rapid loss of nature and implications of this to humans. We need to pivot nature to a position of attention similar to the achievements we had for climate change through the Paris Agreement. People have taken more and more from nature through unstainable practices like massive deforestation, poaching, pollution thereby destroying nature at an unprecedented scale without recognizing the cost and implications.

Now is the time to raise awareness on the importance and critical role nature plays in ensuring human wellbeing. Nature is everything; the air we breathe, the water we drink and the food we eat all depend on functioning natural systems. Protecting and preserving nature is a fundamental solution to reversing the effects of climate change and re-establishing a thriving natural world.

2020 is a living reminder that nature is indispensable for our existence. How we treat nature has a direct impact on us. Our future and the future of the planet has an inherent relationship. We need to drastically change our approach and interactions with nature towards a more sustainable pathway. Ensuring thriving natural systems is a must for our future and no longer a choice.

2021, known as the super year, will be a turning point for nature based on the pathway chosen by world leaders. Key political decisions will be taken by world leaders on Climate Change (COP 26) sustainable development (Sustainable Development Goals) and biodiversity (COP 15). The outcomes of these decisions will affect the state of our planet and our future. You can be a part of the solution by raising your voice for nature and making every day an earth.

Earth Hour 2021 is the perfect opportunity for people to speak up for nature. I am speaking up for nature this year by promoting sustainable food production. You can take any innovative action that demonstrates you are speaking up for nature. You can also take action by adding your voice for the planet today at https://voicefortheplanet.org/ calling on world leaders to agree on a New Deal for Nature and People in 2021.
